Artist Statement
Joshu Lucas, a Los Angeles based sculptor and painter, combines the romanticism of the past with the modern day convergence of cultures into his vibrating depiction of the human form. Lucas’ training as an athlete and his expertise in martial arts has enriched his knowledge of the human form, allowing him to create work imbibed with power and motion.
Joshu Lucas’ oil paintings and figurative sculpture explore race, ethnicity and human relationships, offering moments of beauty, serenity and optimism. Lucas’ recent work reflects a political influence, as part of his response to the state of the world and specifically about war and global warming. With impassioned energy, Lucas creates figures propelled by the movement of their body forming intense and graceful moments of spiritual and physical unity.
Joshu Lucas currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Lucas studied fine arts at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. Lucas’ paintings and sculpture have been exhibited in museums and galleries, as well as included in public and private collections, nationwide and internationally.
